a beautiful thing to experience. During our candid conversations, my cluster leader, Aubree Adams, would
challenge us in our ways of thinking and push us to do more within a specific area if it was related to the goals
we discussed.
In addition to the cluster groups, each day of the conference consisted of different sessions focused on a
specific aspect of housing (i.e Supervision, Facilities, Crisis Management, Assessment, Occupancy etc.).
Each session was also led by a different faculty leader which allowed us to build connections with the other
professionals leading RELI. One memorable session was the discussion of facilities by Wesley Todd, Associate
Director of Housing for Facilities Management at Wake Forest University. During the presentation, Wesley
taught us the importance of having a plan in managing the day-to-day operations of our buildings. He
challenged us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. For example, if we're in a meeting discussing
the facilities of our area and we don't understand what's being discussed in the meeting, we should use our
resources to research what we don't know and ask questions to show engagement to learn how things work.
In addition to the daily sessions, we were able to build community through lunch discussions, virtual game
nights, and 1:1 meetings with our cluster leaders.
During the lunch sessions, a faculty member would be present to discuss a specific topic. My most memorable
lunch discussion was focused on having children and working in student affairs. Not only was I able to talk
with higher-level professionals about the joys, fears, and struggles of having a family within student affairs,
but they also offered great tips on how to manage the transition. Everyone that attended the session either
already had children or were planning to have children in the future. From this session, I connected with
another colleague who added me to a virtual community of parents on Facebook that work within student
affairs. Small memories such as this continue to remind me of the connections that were established during
the virtual RELI week.
