and accepts a permanent student staff position. There can be many steps or obstacles that come
along with being brought on mid-year - operationally with assignments and contract transfers,
coordinating bedspace turnover with Facilities, inheriting an established community, change of
routine, assimilating to a team, modifying schedules, etc. Coordinate ways to make this transitional
period clean for all those impacted.
* Prepare off-cycle on-boarding/training plan - refresh on training content that was discussed during
training, review past staff meeting agendas, identify a buddy/mentorship experience, carve out a few
additional 1:1s with their supervisor in the beginning, etc. With a comprehensive Priority Alternate
process, everything should be overall ready to rock and roll!
* Consider for how long you replenish the Priority Alternate pool and when you allow the pool to
deplete. In late spring and early Summer, we needed to offer RA positions to the candidates in
the Priority Alternate pool. We offered the Priority Alternate position to other candidates in the
recruitment cycle up until early July. This way, we would have a full team of Priority Alternates for the
academic year in the event of vacancies that are likely to occur.
* Every Cycle Comes to an End
* There may come a point when you need to close out the current Priority Alternate cycle and start
new. Is it due to depletion of the Priority Alternate pool? Could it be the time of the academic
year where it makes the most sense to start fresh? Is your next cycle asked if they are eligible and
interested in being considered a mid-year hire?
* Keep Priority Alternates informed of where they are in the process. Let them know if they are still
classified as a Priority Alternate, or if their appointment has ended.
