Project Management
is for Res Lifers
By Miguel Sosa, University of North Florida & Katie Lewis, University of North Florida
As student affairs professionals, we are often tasked with initiating, developing, implementing,
executing, and evaluating projects or initiatives. However, many of us have had to wing it and hope for the
best when it comes to our unrealized versions of project management. Reflecting on our past experiences
leading projects, we realized there must be a better way.
How many of us received formal project management training or hold the title of Project Manager?
How many have been able to squeeze out projects through hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of luck?
How many of us have settled for just meeting deadlines and staying under budget, without truly optimizing
resources or exceeding expectations?
Your authors aspire to do more than just " okay-ish, " and found some insight to share. One book
stands out in particular when sharing our secrets: Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager by
Kory Kogon, Suzette Blakemore, and James Wood. It has been a game-changer in our approach to managing
projects.
We learned that Project Management is about two things: effectively leading people and skillfully managing
a process. Essentially project management boils down to a simple formula, a very simple formula:
Committed people + effective process = success
Projects are built and completed through people and their interaction through understanding and
commitment to common objectives.
Project Managers are those who lead people through a process to achieve a desired result. They are skilled in
managing projects and helping team members execute and convey their results/ideas to their stakeholders.
The mantra that a Project Manager needs to keep at the forefront is: Who will do what by when?
Approaching our work with a project management lens adds value to tasks, such as:
* Residence Hall Renovations
o Meeting timelines
o Adhering to budgets
o Minimizing daily disruptions
●
* Programming and Events
o Planning initiatives
o Allocating resources
o Structuring staff roles
o Ensuring assessment efforts
