level, continuing training and education surrounding LGBTQ+ identities. This can also include
allowing staff members to go through safe space training so that they can get connected to a
network of students and professionals who have also been trained to be safe spaces. It is also
important that if you are in these spaces and you have questions that you ask and get support and
advice from others who may have experienced something similar.
I have also continued to educate and show my support for LGBTQ+ students in my role as a
Residence Coordinator at Louisiana State University. When I first arrived at LSU in 2021, there was no
established safe space. It would not be until the Spring 2023 Semester that an LGBTQ+ Center was
opened on campus. Prior to Spring 2023, there was a room in the Women's Center that was used
as a safe space but it was not widely publicized so many students would never know about it. While
there was not an official safe space, the Residential Life Department did something unique for our
LGBTQ+ students. Our Housing department put on a Drag Show! Our drag show was one of the
most well attended events for our department. When we planned and put on the event, we had the
goals of educating students about LGBTQ+ identities and providing them a safe space where they
would be able to attend their first drag show. These goals also allowed them to meet other students
who may identify similarly to them. In 2022, I had the opportunity to plan the show. In doing so, I
wanted to make sure that we were not only connecting students to our on-campus resources but also
connecting them to the larger LGBTQ+ community in Baton Rouge. The main way we accomplished
this event was by asking the Mystic Krewe of Apollo to attend and speak at the event. We also were
included in LSU's Homecoming Week as a marquee event for students to attend. Our department
offered a safe space for students before there was an established one on campus. This event may
also inadvertently give the entire Residence Life staff the label of safe space where LGBTQ+ students
knew if they ever did need anything, they could come to us for help.
