SEAHO Report - Summer 2023 - 22

Neurodiversity
in the Workplace
By Nic Capano, Davidson College
INTRO & DISCLAIMERS
This article is an adaptation of the presentation of the same name from SEAHO 2023. I was fortunate
to present my program on the first day of the conference and the attendees were wonderful with
their interaction and feedback. As a disclaimer, I am not a mental health professional, and there are
no attempts to make diagnoses at any point. I also acknowledge that while there are many aspects
of Neurodiversity, I mainly focus on ADHD and Anxiety as they pertain to my experience.
The four goals I set for the presentation and article were:
1) Develop awareness of Neurodiversity (and specific definitions).
2) Guide the participants through introspective reflection.
3) Examine the workplace through interpersonal discovery.
4) Make a call to action while providing helpful and meaningful takeaways.
THE WHY
I built the presentation and have written this article in hopes that the discussions generated from
it would help our Neurodivergent colleagues in need. I believe lives can be vastly improved with
relatively simple efforts. The support and grace we extend to students should be extended at the
professional level as well. The discussions around Mental Health in general are helpful but this
presentation focuses on more specific topics. I believe by clearing up definitions, misconceptions,
and expectations we can create a better working environment for all.
1. DEVELOPING AWARENESS
Definitions & Context
" Neurodiversity " is usually defined as the diversity or variation of cognitive functioning in people.
" Neurodivergent " refers to a person whose brain functioning differs from what is considered
" normal. " " Neurotypical " refers to a person whose brain functioning is considered " normal. "
" Neurodivergent " is not a label from the medical community and is not meant to make anyone
feel less-than or othered. Everyone has a unique brain and therefore different skills, abilities, and
needs. Neurodivergent conditions include ADHD, autism, dyslexia, Tourette's, and a range of other
neurodiverse conditions. Finally, only a group can be Neurodiverse, an individual cannot (they are
either Neurodivergent or Neurotypical). Graphic 1 helps further explain the previous definitions.
