Intersectionality and Neurodiversity
The three dimensions of an inclusive climate are: fairly implemented employment practices,
integration of differences, and inclusion in decision-making. This applies to many different aspects
of diversity and focusing on creating an inclusive climate in the workplace will have positive effects
for all. I approach this topic as a cis-gendered, able-bodied, straight, white man. Each perspective
is unique and the experience of fellow Neurodivergent people in the workplace can differ vastly
given the many identities we hold. It is important to recognize this and the fact that some people
may not feel comfortable discussing their mental health with others (even if the environment
seems welcoming) and that is ok. For example, a young queer black woman who has a middleaged
white male supervisor may not want to tell him that she has ADHD. Choosing to " disclose "
Neurodivergent conditions is not required and shouldn't be taken lightly. Some people feel that if
they tell their boss or HR department about their neurodivergence, they might be seen in a negative
light or suffer repercussions. By supporting Neurodiversity on a large scale, people don't have to
feel like the pressure is on them to hide part of their identity or find ways to cope. It doesn't solve
everything, but it creates a more positive environment.

I interviewed Assistant Dean Walter Snipes, our Director of Residence Life here at Davidson College,
about the landscape of Neurodiversity in higher education. He focused on the idea that supervisors
and leaders need to embrace working with people who bring different experiences and backgrounds
to the workplace. Walter stated, " In particular, if we can understand that our students process things
differently, these students become our employees. So, we need to be open to that. "
