SEAHO Report - Winter 2023 - 33
CONCLUSION
The research I conducted outside of the fieldwork
provided me with an explanation of why people
chose to live where they do and the ephemeral
nature of temporary ownership. The idea of " home "
extends beyond the physical place; it is your personal
items and touches in the room in the building in
the community around campus and the people you
surround yourself with. It is the place where you feel
the most comfortable being your authentic self.
College students often do not have full control over
where they chose to live. For first-years, they have
to live on campus in a residence hall that is assigned
to them. They can preference which residence halls
they would prefer to live in but may not get their
choice due to space availability. Upperclassmen
students have more freedom to choose where they
live but can be limited based on their financial and
material needs. Since not every aspect of spatial
housing is controllable, residents can enhance and
customize their spaces with material items and social
associations to adapt the space to their needs. This is
how students can create a sense of belonging in their
temporary space.
The pandemic makes it difficult to fully assess
the significance of collegiate temporary spaces
in urban folklore but for the most part, I feel that
this study provides a sound foundation for further
research. The scholarship assessed allowed me to
make connections between the purpose of décor
and ownership of spaces. Additionally, it posed
the interesting question of when, or if, ownership
is ever completely permanent or if it is always a
type of performance. The sense of home does not
come from a physical place but is heavily influenced
by social and material needs. Further study would
reveal how interconnected these needs are with the
types of social groups and their housing choices. As
guidelines are lifted, it was interesting to revisit this
study to see what has changed for students and the
future of university housing.
