SEAHO Report - Winter 2023 - 9
To wrap up this statement, I wanted to provide some insight from my life's greatest passion - my family.
My partner Nicole, who has been by my side since I was an RA over 20 years ago, supports me in pursuing
this opportunity because, " I know how much you love your SEAHO family, the opportunity to mentor other
professionals, and the culture that SEAHO fosters among its members. You get so excited to see your
people and it inspires you to do great work in your profession. Being around SEAHO people rejuvenates
you. I love that passion that you carry with you. " My kids, Campbell and Jonah, who have only ever known
me to be involved in SEAHO, say I should be President-Elect of SEAHO because " You are really smart and
that means you can improve a lot of stuff. You have a lot of SEAHO experience, have a good strategy for
how to do things, [and have] also run for three years and have not been elected yet. " I ensure you there is
no one who wants to serve in the President-Elect role more than myself. No one would take greater pride
and responsibility for the Cromag, Two-Step, and SEAHO than I do. Thank you for considering me - be safe,
happy, and well - I look forward to seeing you in Richmond!
PRESIDENT-ELECT
DR. SHYLAN SCOTT
WILLIAM & MARY
Since my first SEAHO in 2006, our organization has grown in membership,
reach, and influence. I am grateful to have been a part of this organization and
to be able to play a part in our organization's growth and stability. If elected,
I will dedicate my presidential term to forwarding our mission of " advancing
excellence in housing programs and staff by promoting best practices,
networking, professional development, and involvement opportunities. "
My goals include continuing to actualize our strategic plan; increasing
opportunities for community and engagement; increasing institutional
involvement; providing support and strategies for professionals transitioning
through all stages of their careers; and communicating consistently between
members, institutions, and our international housing community to bring out the very best in our association
and each other. In short, my action plan will be to make SEAHO the premier association it can be by
amplifying all our voices, living our values, and collaborating with you to implement initiatives that encourage
and empower our membership to excel and make SEAHO a welcoming community and professional home.
For over a decade, I have been involved in ACUHOI, SEAHO, and VACUHO giving time, and money,
participating in various capacities and serving on the executive boards of the latter two. Most relevant is my
work with SEAHO. I have held positions on the Executive Board and the Governing Council for seven years as
Treasurer, State Representative, and Conference Coordinator. I have served on several committees in various
roles. I have worked to mentor and grow our profession through serving as RELI & NHTI faculty and as a
program presenter. The depth and breadth of my involvement prepared me well for this role. I know what is
needed to build on our success. I understand how to get things done. Understanding the systems, processes,
finances, and governing documents give me a unique insight into the workings of our association and how to
continue improving and advancing our association.
Our work is hard, honorable, valuable, and needed. Now, more than ever, SEAHO must be an association
that connects and delivers encouragement, community, opportunities, continuing education, and valuable
resources to our members. In addition, SEAHO must provide innovative solutions to the challenges
we face. I am dedicated to each of you and our work. From our senior housing officers to our midlevel
professionals, to our new professionals and graduate students working together we provide immense
