As this flowchart shows, any one situation can involve dozens of individuals and offices. As a result, housing
and residence life professionals need to be plugged into a network of support on their campuses to provide
students with the help they most need, in the most efficient way possible.
Strategies for Campus Partnerships
Start by identifying the campus and community partners who are currently involved in responding to students
of care and concern and assess whether any additional partners should be included. Commonly, campus and
community partners include the Dean of Students, University and/or community Police, Counseling Center
staff, Student Conduct, General Counsel/Legal teams, Retention Advocates, Academic Advisors, and others
depending on the campus context. Once identified, create a rubric that clearly defines the role each partner
plays in supporting students of concern. This should include specific processes that outline who is responsible
for which tasks. Attendees shared the fear that when everyone tries to support a student, no one necessarily
does it well. Ideally, supporting a student of care and concern should have outlined processes so the student
receives the most relevant support and outreach based on their needs.
Establish both formal and informal methods of fostering relationships with these partners to ensure strong
collaboration.
