How the Hub Concept Positively Impacts Students
We have all heard that the generation of college students we currently serve like information immediately. One
of the leading positive impacts for our students is that each housing office is equipped with a team to help
students get answers in a more timely fashion. This also allows our team across functional areas to learn the
importance of collaboration immediately. A great example is when we have facilities concerns in a student
room, we get to collaborate with our occupancy team to ensure we are properly communicating and providing
a new space for our students. Collaboration and teamwork are easy as these positions sit just steps away
from one another, and not buildings a part. When considering our different NeighborHUBs, each is made
up of distinct populations of students. The special interest and Living-Learning Village (LLV) communities
look different, along with large differences in majors and academic standing across our campuses. Having a
dedicated team that can consistently serve a similar population of students allows for growth and development
of best practices. In our upper division community that allows for 12 month housing, additional move out
procedures needed to be created to ensure that the incoming students would feel at home. Having a dedicated
team that allowed for collaboration and brainstorming led to great execution that shows the progression of our
campus and department.
Conclusion
In the five years since the Hub concept was implemented, we as an HRL department have asked ourselves
the question: " does this structure still work? " The overwhelming conclusion each time is that it does still work
primarily because it allows us to most effectively serve our students. The ability to identify needs quickly and
mobilize our teams to meet those needs efficiently has allowed us to provide a quality experience for our
residents. It's quite possible that similar departmental organizational structures exist in the many colleges and
universities that are out there, but overwhelmingly most departments have a more traditional structure. For us
a Kennesaw State, the Hub Concept was an uncommon way to do something common. As a result, we are
commanding the attention of those that call Kennesaw State University home. It is the goal of our newly hired
Executive Director, Chris Bruno, for the Housing and Residence Life Department to capture the attention of
others far outside the borders of our campuses.
We plan to do it one NeighborHub at a time!
