Owning decisions made by others: As decisions are made that will impact your staff at your level or above,
ask the questions needed so you are able to communicate the decision with your team without creating any
unnecessary divides. This is easy when you agree with a decision or course of action, but when you do not
agree with a decision or course of action, it may seem easiest in the moment to share with your staff that you
did not make the decision or that you also do not agree with it. However, this is likely to create additional
problems for you down the road, either by making it harder to motivate the group to do the thing they know
you don't agree with or by creating a divide between those you supervise and those they perceive as the
decision makers. This divide is often put on display when staff refer to 'upper housing' or even directly share
that their supervisor is on their side when giving feedback. This us versus them mentality can lead staff to
feeling undervalued and end up creating additional vacancies.
Initiative: Take action! Don't wait for your supervisor to tell you exactly what to do. Look for solutions to
problems that present themself due to the staff vacancy and propose alternatives. How can your team step
in? If there is a project that lived with the position that is vacant that you are interested in taking on? Have a
conversation with your supervisor about what it would look like for you and/or your team to get involved with
it (consider time, compensation, experience, etc). Your supervisor may not have it on their radar as a project
area of interest for you, so let them know! Even if it's not an area that you are interested in or you haven't
identified a solution for coverage, putting it on their radar early could help it not fall through the cracks.
These are only a few of the areas that have potential to help set you up for success as an effective supervisor
while supervising across levels when short staffed. While priorities may need to shift and time is not infinite,
put plans in place now so that you continue being an effective supervisor amidst staff vacancies!
