I hope that I can be an inspiration to others by bridging clear communication and consistency through the
Director of Communications role. Thank you for considering my candidacy for this position.
Sage Advice
Welcome to this edition of Sage Advice. T'is the season for contemplation. Fall is over, you experienced some
challenges and successes. Maybe those adventures in Housing and Residence Life have you thinking, " What
can I learn more about that I did not know? " , " What can I do to strengthen what I already know? " , and " How
can I figure out what I don't know? " .
I hope that you will consider attending the SEAHO annual conference, but remember, PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT IS MORE THAN A CONFERENCE.
Every institution has lectures, Human Resources classes, discussions, publications, etc. Commit to attending
a session on something you have no idea about but sounds interesting. Asking a colleague, you may not know
as well, might be a step toward building a better relationship.
Read a book on a topic that builds on a skill you already have but want to improve. You could even start your
own book club. You may receive some initial resistance, but the ones who attend will expand their horizons.
Borrow the books from your local library and support community resources.
You could also invite some colleagues from different institutions to a zoom call to brainstorm solutions.
Everyone is looking for ways to improve training, selections, assignments, building turnover, etc. The next
great idea is just a zoom call away.
Of course, if you are attending a conference here is my advice for getting the most out of it:
● Attend the Business meeting. Get to know what the organization is about.
● Visit the Corporate Partner/Vendor area and stop at one or two booths to learn about the service, business,
or product. It could be your next job or simply a solution to a perplexing problem at work.
● Introduce yourself to someone sitting next to you in a session. Ask them what they hope to learn in the
session. To do that, you can't be sitting next to someone from your own institution.
I am sure you can think of a million ways to advance your knowledge and build your skills. These are just some
simple thoughts, some sage advice if you will.
