Virginia Tech: Ut Prosim seaHo feature By: Nicholas Roberts, Resident Advisor, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Ut Prosim, “That I may serve.” The motto of Virginia Tech adorns multiple buildings around campus, the university seal, and one of the eight Pylons above War Memorial Chapel. On a recent February morning, it also inspired over twenty residents from Barringer and Vawter residence halls to gather in the cold pre-dawn hours to begin their day of work for Habitat for Humanity in nearby Roanoke, VA. The VT students, many of whom had volunteered for Habitat in the past, worked hard and efficiently to quickly complete the main tasks for the day, moved onto side projects, and finished the scheduled eight hours of work in six. As these residents demonstrated, a sizable group of dedicated and well-fed college students can profoundly impact their local communities through service. This became the founding idea behind the Barringer-Vawter Service Corps (BVSC). At the beginning of the 20102011 academic year, the Virginia Tech Department of Residence Life outlined three clear objectives for the resident advisors: foster a sense of civility, encourage organic leadership, and build meaningful communities within their residence halls. During the Fall Training Leadership Workshop (program designed to prepare RAs to make a positive impact on their students), the Barringer-Vawter (BV) RAs extensively discussed the idea of establishing a service group both to provide BV residents with ample opportunities for community service and to accomplish all three of these Residence Life objectives. Ideally, the shared experiences and teamwork between the residents during service projects would foster a sense of civility among them, as well as foster civility toward those whom we serve. The service group would encourage organic leadership by presenting opportunities for residents to step up and lead service projects about which they felt personally passionate. Finally, the service projects would assist the resident advisors in building a meaningful residence hall community by bringing our residents together to serve others, socialize, and learn more about their fellow BV residents. The initial interest meeting of the BVSC attracted over eighty residents due to strong contents reports news awards features regions
