student affairs around tHe reGion CONt. as an increase in the number of housing contract terminations. Increases especially are in the areas of (1) abusive behavior, (2) alcohol, (3) drugs, (4) disorderly conduct, and (5) roommate conflicts. Barry University is in the process of beginning the final stages of planning before we construct a new 245 bed residence hall. The residence hall will consist of double and single suite style rooms, with four students sharing a suite. Barry University is expected to maintain its current enrollment and housing numbers are expected to remain the same for the 2011-2012 year. As with most we at Barry are concerned over FRAG as well as additional cuts to Pell as this can have a dramatic impact on our students and those that decide to attend Barry. • The University purchased an off campus apartment complex (504 beds) in October 2010. Property named West Lake Village • Palmetto Hall will open in Fall 2011. This 415 bed facility will be our 3rd facility in South Village • Total on-campus capacity in Fall 2011 will be 3683 beds • The 4th phase in South Village will break ground in summer of 2011 and will open Fall 2012. Facility is 6 story, 533 beds, name TBA later. Barry University Barry University was fortunate enough to have another good year in terms of enrollment for 2010-2011. We opened our doors for the fall 2010 with 1257 students checked in. Due to being over capacity we decided to contract with two hotels Best Western Windsor Hotel (North Miami) and the Daddy-O Hotel (Bal Harbor). We housed approximately 30 students off campus at these two locations for the start of the semester. We ran transportation in the form of a school bus for the extent of the use of these two facilities. We were able to bring all students on campus from the hotel by the second full week of September. Due to space we were also forced to occupy our tour room, as well as all staff apartments on campus in order to house all the students possible on campus. Barry University has seen an increase in the number of student conduct violations on campus over the past couple years. With that there has also been an increase in the number of students being placed on probation as well Florida Updates Florida State University Updates We are enjoying a terrific Spring semester in Tallahassee! In partnership with our colleagues at FAMU, we hosted a fantastic Florida Resident Assistant Seminar (FRAS) just after we returned home from SEAHO. We had several hundred students in attendance from across the state and enjoyed our collective time together. Our esteemed leader, Dr. Rita Moser, retires in November 2011 so we are in full swing with our search for a new director and look forward to welcoming a new CHO sometime later this year. Florida Gulf Coast University Updates Florida Gulf Coast University host FARH (Florida Association of Residence Halls) in January 2011. 163 delegates from 16 colleges and universities from Florida attended the conference. contents reports news awards features regions
