What does advocacy in the
fields of CR and/or PR look
like to you?
Lance Maerz: Advocacy is
commonplace for every clinician in
the field of cardiac and pulmonary
rehab. Most clinicians are familiar
with advocacy on a daily basis
through the scope of encouraging
participation in rehabilitation
programming and making lifestyle
changes. We advocate daily to our
participants to increase adherence
and effort. Some of us have to
be the advocates of our program
to our hospital administration
to ensure our place within the
organization and the continued
funding of our program and
space. Then there are a select few
that carry that advocacy to the
legislative level to demonstrate
and solicit appropriate changes
and support for our programs. We
have to be the advocates for our
patients at all levels.
rehabilitation has increased
through the years due to the
involvement of AACVPR and
the ability to partner with other
professional organizations such as
the American Heart Association,
American College of Cardiology
and the American Thoracic
Society. It is all about promoting
the many benefits of our
programs, spreading the word to
the right people and delivering the
message in a collaborative effort.

Whitney Quast: Advocacy in
CR/PR is identifying issues that
should be addressed within our
programs and our profession.
After issues are identified, we
work toward a solution with
whatever path makes sense
(legislation, administration, etc.).
