The Oil and Gas Industry, both in North America and globally, relies on the supply of quality tubular products to develop
and market hydrocarbons. Beginning as a traditional "Sogo Shosha" trading company, Sumitomo Corporation in the
Americas enjoyed success representing high quality Japanese manufacturers in the distribution of their tubular products supporting the oil and gas industry. Governmental trade regulations as well as customers' heightened service
expectations in the North American market led Sumitomo Corporation to shift its business model from only importing
Japanese products to direct investments in local tubular distribution and service businesses.
Through this network of distribution companies, Sumitomo Corporation was able to develop strong relationships with domestic
manufacturers ultimately leading to equity investment in Vallourec Star. Today, Sumitomo Corporation, through its trade and
distribution business, is an industry leader in the supply of tubular and associated products to the energy sector both within
the domestic U.S. and globally.
Upstream
Sumitomo Corporation is a major supplier of products utilized in the finding and producing of hydrocarbons.
We are North America's largest supplier of Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), the tubular products used in the
well construction operation to produce the hydrocarbons. Our North American presence is primarily through
our subsidiary OCTG distribution companies Premier Pipe, Pipeco Services, Summit Tubulars in Canada, and
Tubular Solutions Alaska. These distribution companies stock and supply OCTG on a "just in time" basis to
support oil and gas companies in the drilling and completion of their wells. Sumitomo distribution companies
have forged long-term alliances with customers and domestic and foreign manufacturers to insure the
operator's ability to meet their well construction requirements. Additionally, we continue to import high
quality material to service this market from various sources globally.
Through our OCTG presence and through our subsidiary company, HOWCO, we are now a major
supplier of raw steel material, semi-finished and finished products to major oil and gas service
companies supporting well construction and completion.
Midstream
Our current focus in the midstream service and supply market is supplying carbon line
pipe, carbon flanges and carbon fittings used in pipe line construction. We continue to
represent Japanese and other foreign manufacturers in support of major onshore and offshore
pipeline projects, often bundling raw pipe supply with ancillary services such as the coordination
of logistics and coating operations to offer a turnkey solution. Additionally, through our subsidiary
company Global Stainless Supply (GSS), a master distributor of pipe flanges and fittings, we supply
carbon pipe, flanges and fittings on a "just in time" basis to national, regional, and local retail distributors.
Downstream
We provide a variety of products ranging from low-end to high-end to various industries. We have large
exposure to the downstream oil and gas industry, power generation, automotive, construction equipment,
medical, and aerospace, directly and indirectly. Through our representation of high-end manufacturers, our
global network and human resources are equipped with great expertise in the PFF (pipe, fittings, and flanges)
business, we provide a diverse array of products including process piping for the refinery and petrochemical
plant applications, boiler tubes and steam generator tubes for the power generation applications, mechanical
tubes for automotive and processing companies, and so on.
And our subsidiary company GSS also supplies stainless pipe, fittings, carbon pipe, flanges and fittings on a "just
in time" basis to national, regional, and local retail distributors mainly for downstream applications. Sumitomo
Corporation in the Americas has built a strong footprint by providing quality products and services to all segments of the
oil and gas industry. We have accomplished this through our willingness to offer multiple supply business models; our strategic relationships with domestic and foreign manufacturers, and our strong relationships with a large population of customers.
