partnership is an arrangement in which parties agree to cooperate to advance mutual interests. For the past 45 years, Robroy Industries Conduit Division and Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA), with supplier Sumitomo Metal Industries (SMI), have shared a very special partnership fostering great success for both companies. Sumitomo is a valued supplier of pipe, and Robroy has continue to be a loyal customer.
David Marshall, President and COO, Robroy Industries and Makoto Nagase, GM of Sumitomo Metal Industries Kashima, Pipe Department, pose with exchanged gifts at the 45th anniversary ceremony.
On June 21, 2012, a catered luncheon was held at Robroy Retreat in Gilmer, Texas, with seven honored guests: Mr. Makoto Nagase, GM of Sumitomo Metal Industries Kashima, Pipe Department; Mr.Akihiko Matsumae, GM in charge of Line Pipe, Tubular Products Export Department; Mr.Tetsuya Fukuba,Technical Engineer of SMU; Mr.Takushi Kikuchi,Team Leader of Sumitomo Corporation; Mr. John Howard, Unit Head, Mid-Down Stream Service Unit; Mr. Koji Noguchi, Product Manager, SCOA; Mr. Rahul Chimote, SCMX Representative, Line Pipe Unit. In keeping with the tradition started during the 40th anniversary celebration in 2007, Robroy prepared a very special gift as a token of appreciation and presented the Sumitomo Team with a medieval bascinet (an armored helmet made up of a helm, a visor and a gorget). The helmet was a three dimensional representation of the Robroy logo. The beautiful piece of armor was encased in a class cube with the inscription “Sumitomo and Robroy Industries – 45 Years of Friendship and Progress”. In addition to this gift, each Sumitomo guest was presented a sgian-dubh (pronounced skeandhu) reflecting the Scottish heritage of the McIlroy family. The sgian-dubh is a single edged knife with a handle often crafted from the antlers of a roe stag, making each knife unique unto itself. In Scotland, the presentation of a sgian-dubh from one friend to another symbolized a commitment to that person’s safety and ultimate happiness. In return the members of the visiting Sumitomo party presented a plate to associates of Robroy Industries with a hand-painted picture of Mt. Fuji. The plate reads, “The Red Fuji Mountain – symbol of fortune and prosperity - for 45th anniversary of business relationship with Robroy Industries”. Sumitomo prepared a brief history of their founder and the early beginnings of their company philosophy and found a striking comparison to Robroy’s history and its Vision principles. The origins of Sumitomo’s philosophy date back 350 years to Masatomo Sumitomo when he wrote Monjuia Shiigaki. In his later years, Masatomo lived in a hermitage, leading both a priestly and
worldly life. He offered instructions to his family and followers of “Priest Masatomo” through letters and other writings on how to do business and live a good life. Monjuia Shiigaki consists of five articles plainly communicating the rules of doing business. These have been handed down as family precepts among the Sumitomo. Based on these precepts, in 1891, two articles were prescribed as Sumitomo operational rules. 1. Sumitomo shall achieve strength and prosperity by placing prime importance on INTEGRITY and sound management in the conduct of its business. 2. Sumitomo shall manage its activities with foresight and FLEXIBILITY in order to cope effectively with the changing times. These articles are still being observed as corporate principles today at all Sumitomo Group companies. The Robroy corporate culture lives by a very similar set of principles known as the Robroy vision. Technology, quality, customer service, employee education and integrity define the way all Robroy divisions conduct their business. The Sumitomo comparisons also include: • At the turn of the 20th century, Peter McIlroy founded Enameled Metals in 1905. Sumitomo started steel production as Sumitomo Metals in 1901. • The name Robroy Industries was adopted in 1967 and Sumitomo Metals established the Kashima Steel Works in 1967-1968.The Robroy/Sumitomo partnership commenced. Now in 2012, Robroy Industries and Sumitomo Metals share their 45-year anniversary of doing business together and this year Sumitomo announced the merger of Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal on October 1. Through the merger the new company will aim to become the best engineering company that focuses on pipeline construction. The golden anniversary of the Robroy/Sumitomo partnership is just around the corner, and far beyond that milestone these two companies surely will share continued business and a rich productive friendship.
