Investment Focus: Silicon Valley Office + Presidio Ventures
New Office and Fund Connects Silicon Valley
Start-ups with SCOA Core Businesses
CALIFORNIA
Santa Clara
F
ollowing the recent opening of the SCOA Silicon Valley (SV) office,
headed by General Manager Tomonori Wada, the company reestablished its presence in the Bay Area, and is now collaborating with
subsidiary Presidio Ventures in accessing and investing in emerging technologies
and innovation through a new investment fund, the "Presidio Ventures
SCOA Fund (PVSF)." The unique structure of the fund, which is jointly
funded by SCOA business groups, makes us able to work in a more
autonomous, fast-paced environment for investment decision making.
In the highly competitive venture investment landscape, it is critical that
decision making happens quickly in order to secure business opportunities.
"We anticipate making between three and five
early-stage investments per year in technology
start-ups," said Wada. "Together with Presidio
Ventures, SC group's Venture Capital (VC) arm,
this new fund makes us pioneers and connectors
between new start-ups and our business groups, in
pursuit of innovation."
Tatsushi Tatsumi, President and CEO of Presidio
Ventures, said Presidio will help open doors for the
new office, given its experience and history in the
investment field.
"Established in 1998, Presidio Ventures is the oldest
Japanese VC in Silicon Valley," said Tatsumi. "Over
the decades, we have secured a solid reputation for
sound investments in many well-known startups in
the technology sector. Our professionals have longstanding relationships with entrepreneurs, venture
capitalists, and universities in the region, and review
hundreds of investment opportunities annually.
PVSF will connect new start-ups with our business
groups, and will be an incubator for innovation."

Kotaro Tameda, GM of SCOA Chemicals & Electronics Group, said the new Silicon Valley Office will help
usher in a new era for exciting opportunities.
"It will be the interface for us to get in touch with
not only the new technology arising in the market,"
said Tameda, "but also with this dynamic new business
model. We have more than 15 group companies in
our Chemicals & Electronics Group, and it would be
advantageous to own actual operations in diversified
business areas, especially where those new technologies
or business models would be introduced. This way, we
can bring synergy between our partners.
We are expecting collaboration in agricultural technology, medical & health care, automobile related chemicals & electronics, and oil field chemicals. For those
areas, the vast majority of the new movement in these
markets is in the US, so communication and monthly reports from the Silicon Valley Office will keep us
briefed, and excited! We can get much closer access to
those new technologies and new business models that
speak to our needs, and we look forward to working
on new projects in collaboration with the SV office."
The name "Silicon Valley" originally referred to the large
number of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers in this
region. Many key technologies including the silicon-based integrated circuit, the microprocessor, and the microcomputer,
were developed here, but the area is now the home to many
of the world's largest high-tech corporations and thousands
of startup companies. Silicon Valley also accounts for close to
one-half of all of the venture capital investment in the United
States, helping it become a leading hub and startup ecosystem
for high-tech innovation and scientific development.
