What do you think is our biggest obstacle there?
Doing business in any developing economy has
challenges in areas such as the tax system, regulations
and foreign exchange. It's hard to be competitive in an
environment with so many variables. Also import and
export are not easy there, because there is a preference
to support local businesses. So, this is complicated
but, given our strong network of SC offices in South
America, I think we have a tremendous opportunity
to develop new business together with our colleagues
in the region.

How do you view the integration of Japanese
management principles with western business
practices?
From my vantage point as CFO, I saw how we
developed our businesses on a micro level, while at
the same time I was able to see market positions
from a macro view.
What is your vision for Sumitomo Corporation in
South America?
South America has good opportunities for new
business development. Their large & growing
population creates vast consumer markets to tap,
and their abundance of natural resources can feed
the growing world demand for food. Brazil especially
is a large country that can potentially bring enormous
amounts of food and even water to the world, so we
need to work these opportunities from the inside,
through our offices in the region.
Generally, I cannot speak about all Japanese management principles, but I can mention Sumitomo's
values and principles. (Mr. Nambu pulls out a Sumitomo
Values card.) I always carry this card with the Sumitomo
principles printed on it. For the last 400 years, these
principles have led our organization, and they still hold
true and should not change. We don't just memorize
them, but we live them and they are the basis for our
long term thinking.
For instance, when we make an acquisition, it is with
a long term objective in mind. We invest in a project
or company not with the intention to sell it for capital
gain only. We want to make it a part of our business
network and help it grow by retaining the people who
can help us bring new value to an industry and to our
group. We also put prime importance on trust, and this
concept is universal.
