Celebrates 10th Anniversary

T

o celebrate the tenth anniversary of Crystal Mover Services, Inc. (CMSI),
SC & SCOA's joint venture with Mitsubushi Heavy Industries America,
company team members gathered on January 27th in Atlanta, Georgia,
home to CMSI's inaugural APM system at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport. Masaki (Mark) Nakajima, President and CEO of SCOA and GM for the
Americas; Takaoki Niwa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America,
Inc.; and Ryohei Funakoshi, Chairman and CEO of CMSI gave keynote speeches,
each extending congratulations and praise to the company for this special milestone.
Since its foundation in 2009, CMSI has provided operations
and maintenance services for all of the MHI Automated
People Mover (APM) systems in the United States. Eight
MHI APM systems are currently operating at five major
US airports, including Dulles International Airport, VA,
and Miami International Airport, FL. In the past ten years,
the number of new MHI APMs coming online has grown
at a rate of nearly one new system per year.
APMs serve as driverless transit systems, which can transport thousands of passengers per day. Using rubber tires
instead of rails, APMs can achieve speedier acceleration
and a shorter braking distance, which is ideal for airport
commuters. The systems reduce airport pollution and traffic congestion by decreasing carbon emissions and vehicle
traffic, significantly reducing the volume of exhaust fumes
near passenger entrances and walkways. Above all, APMs

require extensive planning, development, and assessment
to ensure they meet the needs of each airport; CMSI
accomplishes this through a rigorous design management
process that encompasses innovation, application of best
practices, and collaboration that results in a transformative solution for an airport's framework.
