Undergraduates 345
Undergraduates 350 SUNY Upstate Medical University consists of four colleges that educate health professionals. Two colleges at Upstate—Nursing and Health Professions—are upper-division transfer and graduate colleges and are open to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Students may apply while in high school to secure a position in the program of their choice. The College of Health Professions and the College of Nursing offer bachelor's and master's degree programs as well as a doctor of physical therapy and a physician assistant program. All programs at Upstate are designed to improve human health. Health professionals are in high demand nationwide. Nearly all Upstate students are offered employment prior to graduation. Some programs have direct patient contact and others are lab-based, with little or no patient contact. Our students learn to use the latest technology while working alongside medical professionals in clinical and laboratory settings. Small classes allow for a great deal of individual attention— and students grow close to each other and the faculty. Located in New York State’s fourth-largest city, Upstate is part of a dynamic hub known as University Hill. Syracuse is a vibrant college town and the Upstate campus offers 40 student organizations, intramural sports and activities for every interest.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn. Our upper division transfer, and post baccalaureate programs provide professional education for future health professionals in majors such as Accelerated BS in Nursing, RN-BS, Diagnostic Medical Imaging, Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant. The Master of Science degree is offered in four advanced practice nursing roles: Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Midwifery and Nurse Practitioner; Occupational Therapy, Medical Informatics and Public Health. Our doctoral level programs prepare research medical scientists, medical doctors, and public health professionals. Learning in a diverse clinical and educational environment provides students with insight from colleagues who have come from all over the world to study in Brooklyn. Students develop close relationships with faculty, and professors mentor students in all aspects of their education. Our campus includes computer laboratories, wireless capabilities, two residential towers and on-campus housing for those who want the convenience of ready access to classrooms, laboratories and the library. With over 40 student organizations, intramural athletics and recreational opportunities, students can participate in many social and cultural activities. New York City's theaters, restaurants, shops, parks, museums, and athletic teams are easily accessible by public transportation.

The College of Optometry only offers professional and graduate degrees in the areas of optometry and vision science and no undergraduate programs. The Doctor of Optometry (OD) is a four-year professional program, after four years of undergraduate school (similar to medicine or dentistry). Students entering the OD Program generally have majored in biology at the undergraduate level. A student may accelerate acceptance into the OD Program by matriculating at selected undergraduate colleges (contact SUNY Optometry Admissions for details). Doctors of Optometry are considered the primary providers of visual and ocular care. They provide treatment for many ocular diseases, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and treat patients with a variety of conditions that affect the patient’s ability to function effectively in the workplace and school environment, as well as in leisure activities. The Master's and PhD programs in vision science are research degrees with emphasis on the structure and processes involved in vision. They include physics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, behavioral sciences, applied mathematics and engineering, as these subjects apply to the visual system. A Bachelor of Science Degree in one of the sciences is recommended for entry into this program.
