FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the deadline to apply?
November 1 is the earliest application deadline for Early Decision and November 15 for Early Action. While there is no formal application deadline for regular decision freshman applicants, we recommend you apply by December 1 to maximize your chances for financial aid, campus housing and consideration for your major of choice. Please note, some colleges have specific application deadlines for certain programs of study. Transfer applicants are generally reviewed on a rolling basis. Be sure to be in touch with campuses directly to get deadline information for supplemental applications, auditions, art portfolios, etc. verified by the campus at which you enroll. The SUNY Online Academic Record tool is found at www.suny.edu/SOAR. as an ED candidate. If admitted, you will be expected to withdraw applications at other colleges. Early Action is non-binding. You may apply to multiple campuses as an EA candidate. You have until May 1 to declare your enrollment intentions.

What happens to my application after it is received at the SUNY Application Services Center (ASC) in Albany?
The ASC will prepare one application for each of your campus choices and transmit it to the college. Once your application is sent to the college(s), the ASC will notify you that your application has been processed. Soon thereafter, each campus will contact you to let you know if any additional items are required to complete your application. An admission decision will be made and communicated by each campus to which you apply.

Do SUNY campuses accept AP or college credits taken during high school?
Yes, each SUNY campus evaluates and awards credit for AP and college credits.

What’s most important in the admission decision?
For freshman applicants, it is your high school academic record which provides campuses with information regarding overall performance and course selection. For transfer applicants, your performance in college level work will carry the most weight in the application review process.

Is there a fee to apply to SUNY?
Yes, there is a non-refundable application fee for each campus choice. The application will not be processed until full payment or authorized fee waiver request is received.

Can I confirm receipt of my application?
To confirm receipt of your application by the Application Services Center (ASC) in Albany and transmission of your application to your campus choices, return to www.suny.edu/ applySUNY. You can see which campuses you applied to, academic program chosen, and approximate date by which the campuses should receive your application.

Are there minimum GPA or SAT/ACT requirements for admission?
Each SUNY campus evaluates students individually for admission. Campuses are looking for students who have challenged themselves, worked hard and done well in high school (and college, if you are a transfer applicant). Student profiles vary from campus to campus. For more information, visit www.suny.edu/ campusadmissionsinfo.

Who makes admission decisions?
Admission decisions are made at the college, based on individual evaluation of your academic record. ASC does not make admission decisions.

What is my Applicant ID?
Your Applicant ID is typically your Social Security Number. If you did not provide or do not have a Social Security Number, an Applicant ID number has been assigned to you. It can be found on your acknowledgement letter you received via postal mail.

When will campuses notify me of the admission decision?
Decisions will be made for Early Decision applicants by December 15 and for Early Action applicants by January 1 (January 15 at Binghamton University). Many campuses respond to regular decision freshman applicants on a rolling basis, meaning when an application becomes complete, it will be reviewed and a decision will be made and communicated to the applicant. A few campuses have a set mailing date when most admission decisions are sent to the applicants. Transfer applicants are generally reviewed on a rolling basis. Check with the campus(es) to which you apply for specific information regarding the decision-making process.

Which campuses might request a supplement to this application?
In addition to your SUNY application, most SUNY four-year campuses require or recommend that applicants complete a supplemental application. The supplemental application provides additional information, typically regarding your interests, activities, etc. Many campuses also ask applicants to complete an essay or personal statement as part of the supplemental application. See www.suny.edu/ suppapps for the supplemental application submission process.

How can I get a paper application?
In 2011, 98% of SUNY applicants applied online. While we prefer that students use the online application, we understand that a few students may need to use SUNY's paper application. To request a paper application, call us at 1-800-342-3811, or if you have access to a computer and printer, the paper application can be downloaded from www.suny.edu/paperapp.

When is my tuition deposit due?
Tuition deposits for fall freshmen must be postmarked by May 1. Deposit deadlines for winter and spring terms are determined by the campus. You should make a tuition deposit at only one SUNY college. In most cases, deposits are refundable until May 1. (Applicants admitted under the Early Decision program will be asked to submit a tuition deposit by January 15.) Transfer students will be advised by the campus(es) regarding a deposit date.

What is the SUNY Online Academic Record?
The SUNY Online Academic Record is a webbased tool that allows you to submit your high school grades and courses, as well as your ACT and SAT test scores, electronically. SUNY recommends this method of submitting your high school transcript information because it allows you to complete your application faster and more efficiently. Your information will be

What is the difference between Early Decision and Early Action?
Both Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA) are early application/notification admission programs. The difference is in the application deadline and the binding nature of the program. Early Decision is a binding program which is appropriate if you have a clear first choice campus. You may apply to only one campus
