The Wonders of Wool
There are many types of wool cloth found in quilts, from wholecloth to Victorian crazy quilts. Woolen fiber is coiled like a spring, making it remarkably elastic, a good insulator, and resistant to wear, dirt, and burning. Often the same printed designs that were applied to cotton were printed on wool.

espite England’s efforts to thwart a wool industry in the Colonies, by 1665, a few smuggled sheep had multiplied into 100,000. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson brought spinners and weavers from England and imported large flocks of sheep. Both presidents were inaugurated wearing wool suits. The earliest American examples of wool quilts are heavyweight nineteenth-century bedcovers made from homespun woolen fabric, with wool or cotton batting. The fiber was dyed with plant-derived colorants such as madder or indigo. The quilts remained popular in rural New England through the 1850s, with hand-quilted motifs including flowers, feathers, hearts, and pinwheels. Merino is the softest, finest, and most lustrous of all wool. In 1808, Spain lifted its tight embargo on Merino sheep and sold more than 3,600 rams and ewes to William
