WOODWARD woodward@aws.org AWS Officers Transition in Miami BY KRISTIN CAMPBELL During the transition ceremony Feb. 17 at AWS headquarters in Miami, Fla., incoming President William Rice recalled the brief period about ten years ago when he served as interim AWS executive director. He said working with AWS staff members during that period prepared him for his current position as president. “It’s amazing how far we’ve come in that time,” Rice said, and referred to the five-story office building in Doral, Fla., that AWS will move into this year. He further expressed appreciation for new staff and past board members as well as gratitude to Executive Director Ray Shook. John Mendoza, the outgoing AWS president, reflected on his term. He said he was well treated, respected, and honored everywhere during his travels, especially at the Beijing Essen Welding & Cutting Fair in China, because of how AWS is perceived around the world. Also, he enjoyed seeing welders achieve the AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) status. “Our certification touches peoples’ lives directly,” Mendoza said. It impacts their careers and has a deep relevance to living standards. Mendoza ended his talk by thanking his wife, Nora, as well as the AWS volunteers and employees for their cooperation. David Landon was introduced as the incoming vice president. His wife Kay was present at the event. The following members and guests attended the program: Special Assistant to the Executive Director Richard Seif and wife Carol; Managing Director, Global Exposition Sales Joe Krall; consultant Jeff Hufsey; AWS Foundation Chair Gerald Uttrachi and wife Christine; past President Ronald Pierce; District 9 Director George Fairbanks Jr. and wife Glenda; District 21 Director Nanette Samanich; Directors-at-Large Dave McQuaid and Matthew Lucas with wife Donna; past President John Bruskotter and wife Donna; AWS Treasurer Robert Pali and wife Annette; Vice President Dean Wilson and wife Debi; Vice President Nancy Cole and husband Leon; Cherry Rice; Sandy Shook; and the headquarters staff. Employee of the Year Leroy Morales was presented the 2011 Michael A. Rowland Exemplary Employee of the Year Award. Morales, with the Society for 19 years, is employed in the shipping and receiving department. Born in the District of South Oropouche in Trinidad, his favorite hobby is writing poetry. His award included a check for $1000, an engraved clock, a gift certificate for dinner for two, and a reserved parking space for one year. This peer-nominated award recognizes an AWS employee who has provided exemplary service and made notable contributions above the scope of normal duties, plus possesses an attitude and behavior contributing to teamwork and positive treatment of others in ways that exceeded job expectations. Morales’s nomination form reads, in part, “Leroy has always provided exemplary service to the company and those he assists . . . often, his suggestions provide a more efficient and effective way for accomplishing the task at hand.” He also helps colleagues with various duties, many of which are in addition to his assigned responsibilities, and aids with completing these tasks in a more timely manner.
