Tech Topics New NESCC Task Group on Welding Technology Seeks Participants A call for members has been issued for the newly formed Task Group on Welding Technology and Materials of the Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC). The Task Group will provide a standards-oriented view of existing and innovative welding processes and techniques and advances in metallurgy and materials that affect welding as they apply to the nuclear industry. It is important that AWS is aware of the needs of the nuclear industry so it can respond with appropriate revisions to existing standards and develop new standards to fill any gaps in the regulatory framework. The Welding Task Group will also identify the developers of new and potentially revolutionary welding techniques so that they can be moved into the ASME and AWS welding codes in a timely fashion. It is anticipated that virtual meetings and electronic communications will be utilized as much as possible with other meetings to be held coincident with scheduled relevant technical committee meetings. Contact Convener Thomas Siewert, siewertt@gmail.com, (303) 885-2571, to join. Visit www.aws.org/9RZKBC for more information. The NESCC is a joint initiative of the American National Standards Institute and the National Institute for Standards and Technology created to identify and respond to the current needs of the nuclear industry. Interpretations D1.1 Structural Welding Code — Steel Subject: Welder Qualification Acceptance under Other Codes Code Edition: D1.1:2008 Code Provision: 4.21 AWS Log: D1.1-08-I07 Inquiry 1: Is the intent of AWS D1.1, Clause 4.21, to prohibit use of a WPS qualified to other codes when qualifying welders to D1.1, Clause 4, Part C? Response: No. Inquiry 2: Is it permissible to use a WPS qualified to a code other than AWS D1.1, for example (ASME Section IX), to qualify welder performance in accordance with D1.1 as long as all of the requirements of Clause 4 Part C are applied? Response: Yes. Two New Standards Projects Development work has begun on the following revised standards. Affected individuals are invited to contribute to this work. Contact the staff representative shown for complete information. Participation on AWS Technical Committees and Subcommittees is open to all persons. C4.5M:20XX, Uniform Designation System for Oxyfuel Nozzles. This document presents recommendations to oxyfuel welding, cutting, and heating/brazing torch nozzle manufacturers regarding the identification markings to be permanently applied to the torch nozzle to identify its intended application. The identification will provide information to improve the safe operation and application of nozzles by torch operators. This standard makes use of the International System of Units (SI).
