One day while patrolling, Frank saw a
large bar fight in progress.
" I had all my training, judo and all
the combat stuff, " he said. " There must
have been 40 guys throwing chairs and
I waded right in there and ... "
Frank's lip tightens as he pounds his
fist into his palm and tells his gritty tale,
a Bruce Lee reenactment. There's no
doubt this Pennsylvania farm boy had
the pluck to pull it all off.
But Frank was making $85 a
month, and he learned that paratroopers were earning an extra $55.
" When I saw the ad, I said 'that works for me,' "
he said. " I thought about what war correspondent
Ernie Pyle said - it stood out in my mind. He
said two of the finest in the military were the
paratroopers and the military police. I wanted to
be both, to be the best if I could. "
From there, Frank went to Fort Bragg, North
Carolina to join the 82nd Airborne Division.
" I had to report to the commander control battalion building, and I remember going in and seeing
two guys in uniform, " he said. " I never saw anything
more beautiful in my life - they were tailored. They
had these parachute cords lacing their boots, these
black holsters with gold (piping). "
Frank's face shines with excitement as he
points to a photo of himself on the wall, decked
out in the uniform, gold buttons gleaming from
his broad chest down to his belt buckle. His hands
are curled into fists.
