Sixty-two golfers participate in the first Phillips Buick Scramble in 1983 on a makeshift, nine-hole course. Tournament organizers move tee boxes around to give participants the feel of an 18-hole course. “We played a scrubby little course with no sand traps and postage stamp greens,” recalled former tournament director, the late Marvin Mitchell. The winning golfer receives a trophy purchased at a flea market.

PGA Hall-of-Fame golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez arrives in a white limousine at the grand opening of Hacienda Hills Country Club in 1991. Chi Chi christens the course with a booming drive on the 453-yard, par-5 first hole, which he later calls one of his favorite holes. His other favorite: the 485-yard, par-5 No. 1 on Hacienda Hills’ Oaks course.

Phillips Buick Golf Scramble raises a record $330,000 for the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women.
Canadian Gary Cowan wins the $2,500 first prize in the Senior Series eight-man shootout at Tierra del Sol.

Orange Blossom Hills Country Club opens the community’s first nine-hole course in 1985.
A record 1,162 golfers and 275 volunteers participate in the 1995 Phillips Buick Golf Scramble.

The Senior Series Golf Tour plays The Villages. Approximately 200 senior pro golfers compete for a $105,000 purse during the threeday, 54-hole event in The Villages. The tournament raises $18,000 for the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women.
