Training Industry Quarterly - Spring 2010 - (Page 3)

From Where I SIt | Doug HarwarD Volume 3 I n case you haven’t noticed, the training industry today is much more positive than this time last year. There’s more hope, more energy and more forward thinking. From where I sit, there’s more positive activity in the business, the classroom and the boardroom. The market is continuing to improve. The amount of money being spent on training is increasing. Hopefully this means more jobs will soon follow. In short, we’re coming out of a dark period with a stronger outlook and more flexible natures. One basic truth about change: Nothing is ever the same afterward. So as we move into what’s next, you can expect your executives to ask some fundamental questions. It’s a brave new world, and your leaders won’t want to go back to the old ways. So what should we be looking at? Are we thinking big enough? Are we doing the right things? Are we working with the right people? How do we make sure we’re creating the right map to take us to the right places? In short, it’s time to get creative. You’ll have to decide how best to tap into the energy of your organization, but I will leave you with this checklist. No matter what your plans, ask yourself the following questions to ensure everything stays on track: • What resources do I need? Does this initiative augment or replace current offerings? • How can I best ensure buy-in from leadership? How can I get leadership involved to deepen their commitment? • What are the collaboration options? Can I involve another internal department in the initiative? Do I need support from an external service or solutions provider? • What success factors must I monitor to keep the program contributing? How does this serve larger goals? • Once the first project takes off, what’s next? What are my plans for summer? (Always try to think one season—or cycle—ahead.)
