[TACTICS] GAMES AND SIMULATIONS B Y B J O R N B I L L H A R D T Engaging with on’t people learn more by practicing than by passive listening? How many kids learn how to ride a bike from a textbook? If given the choice, who wouldn’t want to play a game instead of a listening to a PowerPoint presentation? It’s for these reasons—the proven success of experiential learning and the sheer enjoyment provided for the learner—that training simulations and games have become popular. Despite this popularity, there are still logistical objections in the training world to simulations and games. Creating these programs can be expensive or time-consuming, capable facilitators may be difficult to find, and participants may not have MOST PEOPLE KNOW WHAT FUN “FEELS LIKE.” access to fast computers. These concerns are valid, but there is another, perhaps more challenging barrier to using games and simulations to train: Many designs are simply ineffective or boring. Many simulations and games fail to engage learners and fall short of achieving the desired learning and business outcomes. A poorly conceived game can achieve worse results than a mediocre lecture. Think about it: The videogame industry is larger than Hollywood and iPhones are ubiquitous; it is nearly impossi- ble for people today to go through life without encountering good— and very bad—game design. Most people know what fun “feels like,” and if they are asked to play a game that isn’t fun they will actively disengage. So how do you create an effective and engaging game or simulation? #1: Don’t Lose the Forest for the Trees Too many times, design teams attempt to model more than is necessary. Modeling the entire workflow of an organization or the complete competitive dynamics of an industry is unnecessary.
