A Hot Trend: Enhance habitat with Prescribed Fire Long before humans arrived in America, forests relied on fire. Many forest ecosystems evolved with fire and continue to rely on it to reduce dense underbrush, restore nutrients to the soil, and provide important wildlife habitat. In recent decades, people aggressively excluded and suppressed fire to protect public and private investments, homes, and forests. unfortunately, putting out all those fires created new problems — overly dense stands, heavy accumulations of dead vegetation, and major changes in wildlife habitat. Anticipated climate changes will amplify the effects of fire suppression through increased incidence of noxious pests and drought. In combination, years of fire suppression and shifting weather patterns have led to treacherous levels of forest fuels, greatly increasing the risk of catastrophic wildfire. 12 Tree Farmer SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2009
