Tree Farm Provides Safe Harbor for Northern Spotted Owls and Marbled Murrelets More than 45,000 acres of private timberland in eastern Lewis and skamania counties of Washington state will be managed for 60 years as habitat for two threatened species — northern spotted owls and marbled murrelets — thanks to an agreement between Port Blakely tree Farms, LP, and state and federal natural resource agencies. Under a Safe Harbor Agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Port Blakely Tree Farms will manage habitat for northern spotted owls and marbled murrelets. The company will do the same under a separate state landowner option plan and cooperative habitat enhancement agreements with the Washington Department of Natural Resources and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The agreements allow Port Blakely to conduct forest management activities in a predictable manner and protect the company from future restrictions and “incidental take” penalties in exchange for habitat enhancement activities that will provide a conservation benefit to the threatened species.
