Competition
DAVID R.
As a Tree Farmer, it is important that you understand the impacts created by competing vegetation in your woodlot. Competing forest vegetation has the potential to impact regeneration success, slow proper timber stand development, and reduce native plant and wildlife species diversity. Competing plants can limit future growth and development and thus, future timber value. Competing plants do this primarily by competing for sunlight, water, nutrients, and space that would otherwise be available for more desirable plant species.
Herbicide treatments are often used to reduce competition between undesirable vegetation and planted or naturally established tree seedlings.
