Weyman A ‘True Mentor’
2010 Wesley R. Meier Outstanding Inspecting Forester of the Year Award
Editor’s Note: The Wesley R. Meier Award was established in 1998 to honor the work, life and passion for forestry of Wesley Roger Meier, a former outstanding and dedicated volunteer inspector for the American Tree Farm System in Wisconsin. Though he lost his life to cancer in 1994, the award shines as a living memory of his exemplary work for ATFS, for which he volunteered for 14 years. In having this award bestowed in his name, Mr. Meier has been honored by the Tree Farm inspectors of his day and by those who come after him.

Who’s the guy in the official forestry commission uniform, who slips a few football terms into his woodland talk? “He’s dedicated,” according to Walt McPhail, 2002 Southern Regional Tree Farmer of the Year. “Professional, with a tremendous work ethic.” With these words McPhail introduced Kirk Weyman, the 2010 Wesley R. Meier Outstanding Inspecting Forester of the Year, to the forestry community gathered for the National Tree Farmer Convention in July. But if you live and work among the forests of South Carolina, you already knew the answer. Weyman, a retired forester from the South Carolina Forestry Commission (and longestserving member of that commission), is known among his colleagues for his deep commitment to the American Tree Farm System. Weyman’s dedication was first recognized in 1982, when he received the Bronze Hard Hat Award for the southern region. He completed 25 Tree Farm inspections that year.
From left: Kirk Weyman receives the Wesley R. Meier Award from American Forest Foundation President Tom Martin and South Carolina Tree Farmer Walt McPhail, who nominated Weyman for the honor.
