The author relaxing among his collections (photo courtesy of Ruth Ann Tesanovich). wildlife matters By Jackson JeFF When I find something interesting in the woods, I often take it home. After more than six decades of collecting, I have accumulated a huge assortment of items. Perhaps you are like me, and you have acquired deer antlers, arrowheads, old bottles, animal skulls, odd stones, interesting insects, old fishing lures, and other souvenirs. Woodland Treasures I leave them there if I do not have a chosen place for that kind of item. Some of these things can serve their purpose outdoors. For example, I have a collection of deer skulls with antlers on the side of the house. They are arranged by year class, with the oneand-a-half-year-old bucks at the bottom, two-and-a-half-year-olds above them, and an older mature buck at the top. That way I can advise friends who come to hunt about which deer we aim to protect and which they can pursue. I have a couple of friends who collect pieces of old agricultural implements that they find on their land. One displays them on the side of an old outbuilding. The other uses them to decorate the fence bordering his driveway. Jeff Jackson is a wildlife management consultant, based at his Tree Farm in Arnoldsville, Georgia. How to Exhibit Your What should you do with your special treasures—throw them away? How could you! Instead, use them as conversation starters, teaching collections, or as unique decorations in your den or living room. Here are thoughts on how to manage and use your collected items. Find the Right Location A first step is to leave new things outdoors while you think of what to do with them. I have some piles of things in the woods not far from the house. 26 Tree Farmer FALL 2012
