It sounds like a long time, but in the whole scheme of things, one hundred years is just a blip on the historic time line.When compared to North American history of maybe 400 plus years or so, or European history of 800 years and more, and include biblical times or Egyptian history dating back 4,000 years or more; then 100 years does not seem to be a long time at all. Nonetheless, it is a gigantic accomplishment for an association to survive, and thrive for 100 years! From the IAFP History Book: “In 1911, a group of men engaged in advocating improved cleanliness in milk production — men whose purpose was ‘producing and marketing the products of the dairy cow’ — banded together because of their conviction that improvements were needed in the nation’s milk supply. The problem was not one of quantity; the supply of milk was ample for the needs of the population. Rather, the need was for better quality — bluntly, a more-clean product.” As a result of this humble beginning, today we are the International Association for Food Protection. Over the years, we have adapted our name to ﬁt the then current direction of the Association. In the beginning, we started our association life as the “International Association of Dairy and Milk Inspectors.” The intent of the original group of “men” who formed the association was to provide standardization between cities and states in the way they produced milk and milk products (since the organization was predominately involved in the United States dairy industry). At the time in 1911, cities either had no standards, or they set their own standards and untrained individuals were responsible to “enforce” those standards of production. “COMMENTARY” O By DAVID W. THARP, CAE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “I believe our founding fathers would be very proud of the organization they formed 100 years ago” As the organization evolved, the name changed to ﬁt the association needs. In 1938, the name changed to the “International Association of Milk Sanitarians.” Then, as inspectors of milk also assumed responsibilities of inspecting food, the name was amended to the “International Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians.” This occurred in 1950. As environmental issues became a part of the inspector’s work, the name was again amended in 1966 to be the “International Association of Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitarians.” The organization then became known by its acronym, IAMFES. This name stood until it was changed in the year 2000 to our current name of the “International Association for Food Protection.” Over all these years and all the name changes, one element stands out as a paramount issue. That is the Members of the Association have always been interested in providing a safe, wholesome food product (including milk!) for consumption by the public. This is to say; whatever food product is consumed should not make you sick as a result of that consumption. A secondary element for the organization is that our information has always been based on sound scientiﬁc research. Today, we are much more of a scientiﬁc organization than we were in the early and mid days, but even in those earlier times; science was always very important to the Members of this Association. Our meetings, symposia and journals today are ﬁlled with scientiﬁc presentations and articles. Journal articles are peer reviewed as they have been since the start up of the ﬁrst association journal. That journal published in 1938, was titled as the Journal of Milk Technology. Then in 1946 the journal name was changed to add “food” to the title making it the Journal of Milk and Food Technology. Later, in 1977, the title was again changed to the Journal of Food Protection. This name has stood the test of time and actually inﬂuenced our Association direction to be a more scientiﬁc association.
