To understand bioMérieux’s commitment to quality and to the public health sector, one first needs to know the unique history of bioMérieux, starting with the Mérieux family and Marcel Mérieux, a chemist who trained with the father of microbiology, Louis Pasteur. Combining his strengths in chemistry and microbiology, Marcel Mérieux founded the Institut Mérieux where various animal and human vaccines were developed. Later acquisitions of API Systems,Vitek Systems, and Organon Teknika strengthened bioMérieux’s expertise in the diagnosis of infectious diseases.Vitek Systems brought to bioMérieux automated instrumentation that had been initially designed for bacteriological diagnostics in space. In addition to these acquisitions, new products developed through a strong partnership of engineering and microbiology research and development have made bioMérieux an industry leader in automated microbiological diagnostic testing. From bioMérieux’s beginning in the field of infectious disease diagnostics, it was only a matter of time before the company would dedicate resources to the development of products for the improvement of food safety and food quality, thereby playing a critical role in ensuring the safety of public health before the need for hospitalization of patient diagnosis. A separate division, bioMérieux INDUSTRY, was created and has been providing food processors with innovative, testing solutions for more than 20 years. To meet its goals, bioMérieux subjects itself to strict quality assurance standards. Since 1995, nearly all bioMérieux facilities have been ISO 9002 certified.
