Minutes of the international association for food Protection 2012 annual Business Meeting July 24, 2012 Providence, rhode island P resident-Elect Katie Swanson welcomed attendees to the Annual Business Meeting and introduced Isabel Walls. Moment of Silence President Isabel Walls asked those present to observe a moment of silence in memory of departed colleagues. Call to Order The Annual Business Meeting of the International Association for Food Protection was called to order at 12:16 p.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. A quorum was present as defined by the IAFP Constitution. With the approval of the Executive Board, President Walls appointed Michael Brodsky as Parliamentarian for the Business Meeting. Minutes Minutes from the 2011 Annual Business Meeting which were published in the November 2011 issue of Food Protection Trends were presented. A motion by Bob Sanders and seconded by Warren Clark to accept the minutes was approved. President’s Report President Walls reported a new attendance record for the annual meeting has been set once again with more than 2,520 currently registered. Two new affiliates in Africa and Lebanon were chartered and our International meetings remain strong. The journals are going strong; JFP online usage has increased again this year. The PDGs have been very active this year and the number of webinars has increased. President Walls announced the Board developed a strategic plan which will be published in the August issue of FPT. It focuses on three major points: Recruitment and Engagement, Information Exchange, and Resources and Foundation. She indicated increased membership efforts will include reaching out to the food toxicology community, local and state inspectors, extension and veterinarians. The Association will maintain its International outreach efforts by forming more strategic alliances with organizations such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. A task force led by Don Schaffner has been formed to replace the audiovisual library with current media such as webinars and session recordings. President Walls concluded her report by presenting the Presidential Recognition Awards to six individuals who worked hard on the development of our international meetings. Awards were presented to Ian Jensen, Kenny Sun, Bobby Krishna, Stefano Colombo, Benny Sun and Cary Sun. Tellers Committee Report Jenny Scott, Teller, reported on the Secretary election. There were 673 votes cast and Alejandro Mazzotta was elected as Secretary for the 20122013 year. A motion by Katie Swanson and seconded by Don Schaffner to accept the report and destroy the ballots was approved. JFP Management Committee Report Kendra Nightingale reported that 2011 manuscript submissions from countries outside North America increased 2% over 2010. The committee had a lengthy review of wording used in the Strategic Plan summary as it pertains to JFP. The committee will recommend to the Board that Mike Davidson be reappointed as scientific co-editor, Manan Sharma be approved as Vice Chairperson and that wording of the Executive Summary of the Strategic Plan be changed from “protect status and increase impact of JFP” to “protection status and increase influence of JFP”. FPT Management Committee Report Michelle Danyluk reported there was strong attendance at their meeting this year. She indicated that the Food Law PDG is writing white papers on FSMA and would like to publish them in FPT. The committee is also looking into writing articles taken from Story Core. A sub-committee was set up to look into adding content to the journal such as member profiles on lecturers and long-time members, white paper submissions and longer opinion pieces. They plan to borrow wording from JFP’s plagiarism policy and will recommend the number of issues be decreased from 12 to 6 per 614 FOOD PROTECTION TRENDS | OCTOBER 2012
