Swanson activities, birthdays, and other events to keep everyone informed and to ensure that someone is home to walk and feed the dog every day. It also helps me to put the year into perspective. IAFP trips are planned for February (Program Committee and IAFP Board Meeting), May (European Symposium), July (Annual Meeting) and November (IAFP Symposium in Dubai). The end of January also marks the midway point of my IAFP presidency. The efforts of dedicated IAFP members and staff have made great progress on our strategic plan. We added members and international affiliates. The Annual Meeting remains strong with record attendance again last year. Electronic information exchange increased through webinars and a task force is exploring new applications. The redesign of FPT is yet another element of our strategic plan. All of these efforts require teamwork and engagement of our IAFP members and staff. Happy New Year, IAFP, and welcome to the new Food Protection Trends! The online version of FPT is available to all IAFP members and is searchable for anyone using Google Scholar. We also sent a hard copy of this issue to all IAFP members so you can page through it, familiarize yourself with traditional FPT features in a new layout, and become acquainted with new features. The new FPT will publish four refereed and/or general interest papers every two months, and will include coming events, new technology, and other features. Please enjoy this first updated issue and consider adding a paper subscription to your membership. Also, think about submitting your own content for publication in FPT! January is a month when many of us review plans for the coming year. While I rely on my electronic calendar to keep my schedule straight, I still maintain a paper calendar in the kitchen with all the family FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR With the beginning of the year 2013, we now have a new design for Food Protection Trends. I’m sure you noticed a new cover design and now as you flip the pages you will see the entirely redesigned inside content. One thing that may not be immediately evident is that FPT is now moving to a bimonthly publication schedule (one issue every two months). This was done as a result of discussion at the FPT Management Committee meeting this past year at IAFP 2012. The Committee looked at various options of making FPT more impactful for IAFP Members and improving the value of the journal. A recommendation to publish every other month was made to the Board and was accepted. As Katie Swanson points out above, we plan to publish four articles in each issue along with a variety of special interest items. For instance, this month you will see an article on the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act written by Caroline Smith-DeWaal and David W. Plunkett. Also David W. Tharp included are two items of interest; a “PDG Highlight” where the Pre Harvest Food Safety PDG’s activities are reviewed and a feature we titled “Beyond the Bio” where an IAFP Member’s activities “beyond IAFP” are investigated. We are excited by the new options opened up to FPT as we go forward into the new year. By mailing this issue to all IAFP Members, we hope that you will share in the excitement, too. If you are interested in adding the print copy of FPT to your Membership, simply contact our office and we will assist you in doing so. As an IAFP Member, you can always access all online issues of FPT through the Members Only section of the IAFP Web site. We welcome your comments and input about the redesigned FPT.
