2014 is a set of
four events in the food safety
arena which includes IAFP's Latin
American Symposium on Food
Safety, XII Latin American Congress
of Microbiology and Food Hygiene,
13th International Symposium
ABRAPA Food Safety, and the
Symposium of the International
Commission on Food Mycology.
Held October 12-15, 2014 in
stunning Iguaza Falls, Brazil,
MICROAL 2014 is one of the most important international events in food
safety where the latest innovations in food microbiology and food safety
areas are addressed. Organized by Bernadette Franco and Mariza

Landgraf, both from the Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil, Maria Teresa
Destro from bioMérieux in Brazil, and Marta Taniwaki from the Instituto
de Tecnologia de Alimentos in Brazil, the program included 54 speakers
covering all stages in the food production chain, along with presentations
of work in poster form. Valuable networking took place among the 420
participants who also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition area where
vendors displayed equipment, supplies, kits and other food safety-related
supplies.
The event opened with three simultaneous all-day workshops:
Microbial Challenge Testing for Foods, conducted by IAFP Past President
Don Schaffner from Rutgers University, USA; Fungi and Mycotoxins
in Foods and Beverages, presented by members from the International
Commission on Food Mycology (ICFM); and Sampling Plan & Process
Control, presented by members from the International Commission
on Microbiological Specifications for Food (ICMSF), with Jeff Farber,
IAFP Past President and current ICMSF Treasurer, introducing the
group. The day concluded with the official opening ceremony, featuring
keynote speaker Robert Buchanan from the University of Maryland,
USA, who presented The Future of Food Safety.
Other speakers and topics throughout the next two days included:
Craig Hedberg,who presented Emerging Epidemiological Tools in Food
Safety Investigations; Janeth Luna Cortez, who gave the Colombian
perspective on Public Health Challenges in Latin America: Using
Foodborne Disease Surveillance Data for Food Safety Measures;
Ravindra Ramadhar, who took part in the 1st Thermo Fisher Scientific
Symposium on How Genomics and Proteomics are Changing Food Testing;
Paula Fedorka-Cray, who presented Antimicrobial Resistance and Food
Safety in the 21st Century; Jennifer Cannon, who spoke on Foodborne
Viruses: What Risk for Which Food Sample?; and IAFP Past President
Katie Swanson, who talked about The FDA FSMA during the panel
discussion on Ensuring the Safety of Imported Food.
IAFP is proud to support the Latin American Symposium on
Food Safety as part of MICROAL 2014, providing valuable opportunities
for participants to continue their efforts to improve food safety in Latin
America and around the world.
