As the global host for the annual
China International Food Safety &
Quality Conference (CIFSQ) + Expo,
IAFP is proud to be part of this important
conference that brings together leaders
from government, industry, science
and academia. The 8th CIFSQ, titled
"Improving Food Safety, One Event at a
Time," was held November 5-6, 2014 at
the Longemont Hotel in Shanghai. This
top-level event drew 825 food safety
professionals from 20 countries and
territories for two intensive days of learning and networking among the vast array of topics presented by 96 outstanding
speakers. The latest food safety technologies and innovations were on display by 28 exhibitors.
The decision-makers at the CIFSQ Conference + Expo are responsible for food testing, detection, analysis,
inspection, process control, risk assessments, risk management, QC/QA, audit, certification, compliance, hygiene and
sanitation, research, science, regulatory affairs, enforcement, policy-making, legislation, litigation, standards, product
development, manufacturing and training. Each year, the Conference's educational program resonates across a wide
range of interest, offering a broad scope of topics to explore.
Day One covered keynote topics delivered by 25 speakers. The morning's Regulatory Session included various
topics such as Modernizing Food Safety through Science and Technology; Risk Surveillance Systems in China; and
Verifying Food Safety in a Global Environment. A panel discussion followed with eight topics on Anticipate, Understand
and Mitigate Food Safety Risks - The Food Industry's Response. A networking luncheon was followed by seven
speakers who focused on topics related to Food Risk Management and Regulatory Updates: Current Priorities and
Emerging Issues. The afternoon Science Session, Scientific Developments for a Safer Food Supply, covered Food
Traceability, and Food Fraud Detection and Prevention, followed by two keynote speakers who closed out the day.
Eleven distinct Breakout Sessions composed Day Two, and included International Best Practices for Food Safety:
From Farm to Fork; Advanced Applied Food Testing Methods & Technology; Food Safety Management Decisions
Supported by (Microbial) Risk Assessments; Food Safety Training Programs in China; and Establishing a Successful
Foreign Suppliers Verification Program for U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act.
Ge Zhirong, Honorary Conference Chair, and David Tharp, IAFP Executive Director, gave the welcome address.
Among this year's key speakers were: Alfred Almanza, USDA, who presented Modernizing Food Safety through
Science and Technology; Michael Taylor, US FDA, who spoke on Verifying Food Safety in a Global Environment;
Joan Menke-Schaenzer, ConAgra Foods, Inc., who talked about Food Safety Culture...Keeping It Alive; and Cindy
Jiang, McDonald's (China) Company, Ltd., who presented Mitigate Food Safety Risks through Collaboration with
Suppliers Today and Tomorrow. Jorgen Schlundt, Technical University of Denmark, served as a participant on the
Regulatory Plenary Panel Discussion, and Gale Prince, SAGE Food Safety Consultants, LLC and IAFP Past President,
served as part of a panel discussion on Establishing a Successful Foreign Suppliers Verification Program for U.S. Food
Safety Modernization. Yves Rey, GFSI, and Samuel Godefroy, Health Canada, both presented during Day Two's
Breakout Sessions and served as Moderators throughout the Conference.
IAFP is honored to partner with CIFSQ as China continues to strengthen its focus on food safety, supervision and sanctions.
International outreach through meetings like CIFSQ is imperative in protecting the world's food supply.
