COMMENTARY
FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

As we move into 2018, I'm happy to
report that IAFP is strong and engaged
in food protection meetings around
the world. During the final quarter of
2017, IAFP representatives traveled the
globe representing your professional
society at important international food
protection meetings. President-Elect
Tim Jackson participated at INOFOOD
in Santiago, Chile in late October with 600 attendees, and also at
the Dubai International Food Safety Conference in late November
with 2,000 attendees. Vice President Kali Kniel represented
IAFP at the 11th China International Food Safety and Quality
Conference + Exhibition in Beijing in early November where more
than 800 attendees experienced two intensive days of learning and
networking. In coming months, IAFP will be engaged with our
14th European Symposium on Food Safety, April 25-27 in Stockholm,
and later in 2018, the IAFP Latin American Symposium on Food
Safety, September 25-28 in Buenos Aires.
One very important date for IAFP Members to keep in mind is
January 16, 2018 which is the deadline to submit abstracts for both
the IAFP 2018 in Salt Lake City and our European Symposium
meeting in Stockholm. IAFP has a mission that can be stated very
simply ("to provide food safety professionals worldwide with a
forum to exchange information on protecting the food supply"),
yet is quite complicated to execute properly. That is why we depend
heavily on our Members being involved in the exchange of newly

Happy New Year - 2018 to you!
Although it is hard to imagine, the
New Year is upon us and we must
move forward. Each year seems
to move by faster and faster. It was
not that long ago that we were in
Tampa at IAFP 2017 and now, it is
6 months until we will gather this
coming July in Salt Lake City for
IAFP 2018. Before that time, we will
hold our European Symposium on Food Safety (April 25-27)
in Stockholm. This is shaping up to be a very strong program
and we hope you will consider joining us in Stockholm.
As 2018 begins, we are already scheduling a number of
very interesting Webinars through many of our Professional
Development Groups (PDGs). These Webinars will be available
for anyone to attend. Members will be able to view the Webinars
as a recording after signing in with your Member login. If you are
not involved with a PDG, we encourage you to review the listing
on the IAFP Web site and sign up to be included in the PDG
discussions. You can also volunteer to share your expertise with
the group and help carry out IAFP's mission.
We are also excited to share the financial outcome for our fiscal
year ended August 31, 2017. An abbreviated financial report is
shown on page 87. The Statement of Activity for IAFP's General
Fund shows revenues of $4.1 million and expense of $3.75

discovered and produced information from research programs in
academia, industry and governmental organizations by presenting
posters and technical presentations at the European and Annual
Meeting. Your participation by submitting abstracts for poster or
technical presentations is critical for this organization to function
well... and we greatly appreciate our Members' participation in
these meetings. So, please take the time to write up your research
results into an abstract for submission.
Discussing the abstract deadline brings up the important role
of the Program Committee in the functioning of IAFP. Beginning
on Friday, February 16, the Program Committee will meet over a
long weekend in Salt Lake City to evaluate several hundred abstract
submissions for presentation at IAFP 2018. Throughout Friday
and Saturday, committee members review abstracts, evaluate
symposia and develop the program for our Annual Meeting. This
is the culmination of several months of work that began last fall
after symposia ideas were submitted by the membership.
Having previously served on the Program Committee, I know
the great satisfaction that exists when many months of hard work
come together to produce a successful Annual Meeting. For IAFP
to successfully continue being the "go to" source for scientific
information on food protection, we ultimately depend on you,
the Members. Your support through participating in the Annual
Meeting, on Professional Development Groups, in local Affiliates,
and by publishing in JFP and FPT is critical to the success of IAFP.

million with an excess of $353,000 for the year's activities. Thus,
our Net Assets in the General Fund were at roughly $2,854,000
as of August 31, 2017. This places the Association in a very sound
financial position.
The financial success of IAFP's Annual Meeting since 2010
has allowed the Association to grow substantially. We were also
successful prior to 2010, but since 2010 growth in both attendance
and on the exhibit floor have truly been astounding. This has placed
IAFP in the enviable position of being able to expand our coverage
to around the globe. We have supported food safety meetings in
Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. This would not be
possible without the strong financial position that we currently
enjoy.
Before leaving the financial topic, I should say that the IAFP
Foundation also completed a successful year. With enthusiastic
contributions from IAFP Members and fantastic investment
results, the Foundation added more than $220,000 to its capital
balance while spending out more than $90,000 in supporting the
Association. The capital balance now stands at just more than $1.7
million putting in reach the goal of $2 million by the year 2020.
All in all, the fiscal year ended August 31, 2017 was very good
for IAFP, financially. The calendar year of 2017 was also very
successful. Now, we can set our vision on 2018 and work towards
new successes.
