Develop a complete communication strategy; not only an
initial communication. Sometimes we're happy to complete
a well-conducted study or well-written policy and "throw
it over the wall," hoping it will get implemented by those
who receive it. There is a science to communication that I
never realized until I spend "quality time" with my corporate
communications colleagues dealing with issues and large
initiatives. This science can help determine the appropriate
messaging for the audience, and the most effective format
of communications.
"Walk the floor." The most effective operational food safety,
quality and compliance leads spend time outside of offices
and meeting rooms to walk the production floor or farm,
speak with managers and front-line workers. They do this
on a regular basis, often each day, without a specific purpose
to understand the operations, understand the challenges
workers and operations face, talk about the importance of

programs, and develop the relationships needed to become
a resource and trusted advisor.
The good news is that we are not in this alone. We share
objectives and challenges with our peers in industry, government
and research alike. IAFP and other scientific and professional groups
provide an opportunity to network with colleagues, learn new
approaches and see advances in science and food safety management
that can help address these challenges.
The upcoming IAFP 2019 Annual Meeting in Louisville, KY is
another great opportunity to network, learn and share experiences.
There are 27 PDGs that specialize in relevant food safety topics; 6 premeeting workshops provide an opportunity to get in-depth training
in several areas; the 94 symposia and roundtables cover new insights
and practical experiences in food safety; and the technical and poster
sessions provide updates on new and relevant research.
