Name: Yaohua "Betty" Feng
Employment: Purdue University, Department of Food Science
Location: West Lafayette, Indiana
Passing the Torch of Food Safety
With a deep passion for food safety that began at a young age, combined with
a love of extending knowledge to others, Yaohua "Betty" Feng left her family and
home in China to expand her knowledge, earning advanced degrees in Food Science
from the University of California, Davis. Now, she works to ensure others have
access to educational materials and resources for proper food handling.
Food has always been a topic
of discussion for Betty Feng,
whose father owns a small seafood
processing operation in China.
As a child, Betty recalls watching
her father work and seeing the
challenges he faced as a sole
proprietor to ensure food quality
standards were met while making
a profit to support his family.
"When I had the chance to
choose my field of study, there
was no question it would be Food
Science," said Betty. "I wanted to
help people like my dad but as the
first college student in my entire
family, I never thought about
working in academia."
