From Personal Tragedy to a Career of Passion
Barbara Kowalcyk never saw herself working in food safety. She had started and was
building a great career in the pharmaceutical industry. Then, tragedy struck. It was the
kind of event no parent ever wants to encounter but the kind that would change the
course of her career and her life. Now, two decades later, Barbara has helped drive major
policy changes in food safety and directs the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and
Prevention at The Ohio State University, where she is faculty.
As an undergrad, Barbara had her
sights set on a career in the insurance
industry. A love of statistical modeling
drove her to get a bachelor's degree in
mathematics. With a desire to live on
the east coast and a dream of becoming
an actuary, the recession of the early
1990s derailed her plans.
" My dad said, 'you know, while
you're looking for a job you should sign
up for grad school', " Barbara recalled.
" I was furious with him at the time
and only intended to go to grad school
for one semester. But by the end of
my first semester, I knew I wanted
to get my Ph.D. and I knew I didn't

want to be an actuary anymore. And
looking back, it was the best thing that
could have happened to me. "
After grad school, new job opportunities opened for Barbara. Finding her
way into the research and development
arm of a pharmaceutical company, she
was given the opportunity of a lifetime.
" I got to work on this drug called
Seroquel, which at the time was a novel
anti-psychotic for schizophrenia, " said
Barbara. " Seroquel is now one of the
top selling drugs in the world. The idea
that a 20-something year old would get
to be the primary statistician on three
of the Phase III clinical trials and heavi-
ly involved in the new drug applications
in the U.S. and Europe is unreal. It was
a great experience but I often wonder
what they were thinking! "
Barbara continued her career in the
pharmaceutical industry and started
a family. Along with her husband Michael, who also happens to work with
numbers as a data scientist for an insurance company, the couple welcomed
a daughter, Megan. Nearly three years
later, they welcomed a son, Kevin.
Like many families, they found themselves busy chasing two young children,
taking trips, playing games and enjoying
the occasional meal out. Unsuspecting
that anything could go wrong, as most
do, that's when tragedy struck. At just 2
½ years old, Kevin contracted an E. coli
infection, likely from eating contaminated hamburger meat.
In the days before he became ill,
Kevin had eaten three hamburgers.
