Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (IAFP DEI) Council
In 2020, the International Association for Food Protection Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (IAFP DEI)
Council was established. The current chair is Angela Shaw, vice-chair Armitra Jackson-Davis, and the
secretary is Yvonne Masters. The IAFP DEI Council includes twenty-two active members in total (see
the list and affiliations at the end of this article). The mission of this council is to: Advise and lead IAFP
in implementing and promoting equitable practices while fostering a culture of inclusivity for all members.
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council established four main goals for the 2021-2022 term:
1. Determine who is the membership of IAFP.
2. Evaluate the current IAFP management and structure to determine where opportunities for increased
inclusion and equity can be applied.
3. Design the Council's election and succession planning processes and other Council practices and
procedures.
4. Develop a mechanism for the IAFP membership to provide feedback and ideas to the IAFP DEI
Council.
Within goal 1, a subgroup developed an anonymous survey that was sent to all IAFP Members at the
beginning of February to allow the council to: understand the identities of the general membership body;
identify if there are groups of members not currently served; and allow for the establishment of goals for the
council. This survey will be delivered in winter 2022. This subgroup also desires to update member profiles
with options to add members' identities. Within goal 2, a subgroup is reviewing the policies and procedures
for board members, PDGs, awards nominations, structures, and equity practices. Recommendations to
the IAFP Board will be presented in spring 2022. Within goal 3, a subgroup has established an application
process, an application form, and a frequently asked questions guide. Within goal 4, the council has
developed a schedule to provide online and in-person options for members to provide ideas and feedback
on topics related to DEI.
To support goals 3 and 4, the IAFP DEI Council will host a webinar on March 23rd from 1:00 p.m.-
2:00 p.m. Eastern Time to educate IAFP Members about the IAFP DEI Council and how to get involved.
Members can also meet with the IAFP DEI Council during the IAFP Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, on
July 31st, 2022 between 3:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m. Eastern Time in Room 335. For those who will not be at the
Annual Meeting, we will have a virtual meeting sometime in July. More details will be provided in the future.
