MINUTES OF THE INTERNATIONAL
ASSOCIATION FOR FOOD PROTECTION
2022 ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

President Ruth Petran welcomed attendees to the
Annual Business Meeting.
Moment of Silence
President Petran asked those present to observe a
moment of silence in memory of departed colleagues.
Call to Order
The Annual Business Meeting of the International
Association for Food Protection was called to order at
12:33 p.m. Eastern Time. A quorum was present as
defined by the IAFP Constitution.
With the approval of the Executive Board, President
Petran appointed Don Schaffner as Parliamentarian for the
Business Meeting.
Minutes
Minutes from the 2021 Annual Business Meeting,
which were published in the November/December 2021
issue of Food Protection Trends and were included in the
Business Meeting Packet. The minutes were accepted
by vote after a motion from Carl Custer that was seconded
by Wendy White.
President's Report
President Petran reported that IAFP continues to thrive
despite the many challenges faced throughout the past
year. She stated we are committed to diversity, equity and
inclusion and told that the DEI Council Members have
been busy with many projects. Thanks to each of them!
She reported that everything is in motion for the Journal
of Food Protection to become a fully open access journal
beginning in January of 2023. It was also mentioned that
this year marks the 30th year of working together with the
Institute for the Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences
(IAFNS) (formerly ILSI, N.A.) who help bring symposia to
IAFP's Annual Meeting.
The IAFP Foundation remains healthy and continues to
look for innovative ways to return benefits to IAFP Members
in addition to the services already provided. She pointed
out the Foundation's support of all IAFP webinars.
President Petran concluded her report by presenting
the President's Recognition Awards to Scott Burnett, Julie
Cattanach, Zhinong Yan, Peter Taormina and Craig Hedberg
for their personal support and friendship over many years.

Affiliate Council Report
Affiliate Council Chair Wendy White told that the Affiliate
Council met on Sunday, July 31st. She reported that a
strategic plan was developed for the Council and there
were three virtual Council meetings held throughout the
year. At the Sunday meeting, there were changes to the
Affiliate Council Operational Guidelines accepted by the
Council and those will be submitted for the Executive
Board's approval. She also announced that Fabiana
Guglielmone was unanimously elected as the incoming
Affiliate Council Secretary. The gavel was passed to Amy
Rhodes to begin her term as Affiliate Council Chair before
adjournment.
Executive Director's Report
David Tharp reported that the past year has again
been challenging, but that has now become the normal
way of operating. IAFP faced the challenges by holding
IAFP 2021 as a hybrid meeting (with 1,400 in-person and
1,250 virtual attendees) a record number of webinars
attracting more than 2,500 attendees, and more recently,
holding the European Symposium on Food Safety in
Munich. In addition, IAFP worked to support virtual meetings
in China, Dubai, and Korea (Asia Pacific Symposium).
Each of these efforts helped continue IAFP's mission to
provide food safety professionals worldwide with a forum
to exchange information on protecting the food supply.
David also mentioned future meetings coming this fall
in China, Dubai, Turkey, Colombia and Chile where IAFP
will have an active role. Membership numbers have recovered
after a decline during 2020 and 2021 but still have a
little ways to go to reach our 2019 levels.
For his financial report, David stated that the General
operating fund for IAFP holds reserves of $3.39 million as
of August 31, 2021. This balance includes an increase of
$513,000 for FYE August 31, 2021. The current year has
been fairly good financially if you remove the results from
investments. David cautioned that the outcome for FYE
August 31, 2022 may still show a loss due to the extreme
expenses related to IAFP 2022. Travel, transportation,
food & beverage, labor and audiovisual costs have all
significantly increased over what we incurred just one
year ago.
In concluding his report, David thanked the 10 IAFP
staff members. They do great work and enjoy working for
the Members of IAFP. He also thanked the IAFP Board and
Members for their support and direction over the years.
