access was stagnant. At the same time, there is an increasing
demand from funding agencies for results to be published in
a " Gold Open Access " journal. It was obvious that a move
was needed but it was less obvious which publisher would
make the best partner. Multiple proposals were reviewed
by the board. In the end, the offer from Elsevier was the
strongest. A comparison of the Article Processing Charge
(APC) to comparable hybrid or Gold Open Access journals
demonstrates the favorable partnership. We are closely
monitoring the transition and, as of January, submissions
have not decreased. If you have questions about the change,
please reach out.
I also want to let you all know about the process of
bringing Lisa Hovey on as the next Executive Director of
IAFP. After David let the board know of his intent to retire,
we talked to all the staff members individually, and a number
of recruiting firms and agencies to help us better understand
our options and to develop an action plan for hiring our
next Executive Director. Times like this really show how
valuable it is having a diverse board that includes members
from Academic, Industry, and Government backgrounds.
We established a search committee of IAFP members and
staff, who gained a deep understanding of the needs of the
position and vetted candidates appropriately. As a result of
this process, the committee enthusiastically recommended
Lisa as Executive Director and the board unanimously
concurred. Lisa brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge
and experience with her into this role, after more than 25
years with IAFP, and a strong vision for the future. Please
join me in both congratulating David on his well-earned
retirement, and Lisa on her new position.
And finally, I want to start to share some Canadiana as
we approach the Annual Meeting in Toronto this July. This
time I'll direct you to the short video of the Log Drivers

on TV while I was growing up. Most Canadians of my
generation (and older
) can't help but sing along. If you've

an overnight at a Bedouin camp in the desert. On trips to
China, we took side trips to see the Lijang River and Karst
Mountains (so beautiful) and to Cambodia to Siem Reap to
see Angkor Wat (amazing). On a 2016 trip to Hong Kong,
we were able to stay over and celebrate the Lunar New Year
(most beautiful fireworks ever!). So many opportunities, so
many experiences, so many people we met, so many longlasting
memories!
Over the years, the IAFP European Symposium on
Food Safety has been held in 14 different countries. Each
city and country offered opportunity for more exploration.
Did I already mention Connie? Well, she is the best at
researching unique and interesting sights to see in our
travels. Through tour books (yes, hard copies), the Internet
and other sources, she always finds something exciting for us
to do! We've been below ground, in tall buildings, on high
ground, in cooking classes, on wine tours, historical tours,
and general sight-seeing tours all around the world. I feel like
the travel opportunities presented by my work at IAFP have
just begun to open our eyes to the travel we have ahead in
our retirement together.
Plans for the future? Connie and I have plans to make
some memories together through our travels. We hope to be
able to unwind with a few international trips each year along

with travels around the United States. There are so many
places to visit with each offering new experiences to enjoy.
I'm sure we will continue to enjoy bicycle rides together and
even some winter hiking or walks around the neighborhood.
As I wrap up this, my final column, I want to again say
how much I have enjoyed being the Executive Director
for the International Association for Food Protection. It
has been a truly magnificent experience. Our Members
and Executive Board Members have been supportive and
offered guidance along the way. We have Members who
welcome everyone associated with providing safe food
to the consumer to our Association. Not only do they
welcome them to IAFP, they make them a part of the IAFP
Family by introducing them to other IAFP Members which
strengthens bonds between us all.
Now, I wish you all good health and long-lasting
strength as you continue your work to provide safe food
to the public. I wish Lisa Hovey all successes as she takes
the Executive Director position here at IAFP. I know the
Association is in great hands and will prosper into the future!
So it is goodbye for now. Hopefully, our paths will cross
again sometime in the future. We can raise a glass and toast
to the International Association for Food Protection as we
reminisce about our experiences together.
