connections being made and the interactions occurring at breaks,
in hallways, and at the posters. We were joined by 6 travel award
winners spanning the previous 3 years and delegates from 35
different countries - and I hope many new IAFP Members joining
our extended family. If you've not had the opportunity to attend this
event before, I encourage you to consider it in the future.
As I reflect on the last year, I believe we will be able to look
back on it as pivotal. Change is never easy, but out of it often comes
tremendous opportunities and growth. It gives us the opportunity
to reflect on what we've been doing, and why - are we doing it just
because it's always been done, or because it's the best way for us to
move forward? Don't be surprised to see some changes in the future
as committees are formed to review different aspects of IAFP, with
the utmost respect for the past and an eye on the future.
Now in my final introduction to Canadiana before we meet in
Toronto - I'll direct you to a series of Heritage Minutes https://
www.historicacanada.ca/productions/minutes. These used to
play on tv while I was growing up - and are still being produced and
played today. Classic lines include 'I smell burnt toast' and 'you know
I cannot read a thing' - one even features Dan Akryod (who some
of you might not be old enough to remember). At only a minute
each - they're perfect for today's social media consumption. They
span much of Canada's history - from indigenous populations and
explorers, through medical and technological advances, and telling
the stories of the many moments, cultures, and individuals that
come together to make Canada today. They take a few subtle shots
at Americans along the way; perhaps nothing is more universally
Canadian.
If you're interested to know a bit more about Canada before
arriving in Toronto, give them a watch. I've been thinking about
which one is my favorite, and it's a hard pick to even get down to
a top 5. I'll give you some hints - they include my Mom's favorite
Mountie; the grandfathers of the buffalo; women becoming persons;
and how the Canadian flag was chosen. Reach out on the socials to
