GRADUATE PERIODONTICS
DR. JOHN THOUSAND
FULFILLING
A LIFELONG
PASSION
His infectious enthusiasm is evident the minute
you ask Dr. John Thousand to talk about his work.
"I love my job. I live and breathe Periodontics. I
love the surgery, the research, the literature and
most of all the results that can be achieved for
my patients."
A self-described "perio nerd", Thousand
leads a successful periodontics practice, Dental
Specialists of North Florida, that includes two
offices. A triple CU grad, Thousand received
his undergraduate degree from CU Boulder in
2008, followed by his DDS degree in 2012 and
Graduate Periodontics certificate in 2015 from
the CU School of Dental Medicine.
"I am very grateful to have studied at CU,"
he said. Thousand credits Dr. Chuck Powell as
one of the important people who impacted his
career and life.
"Chuck brings the best out of everyone. His
compassion and trust to allow students to think
independently stand out for me," Thousand said.
Surrounding yourself with awesome people is
what Thousand believes helped him achieve
success and it continues to inspire and motivate
him to provide the best treatment possible for his
patients. Mentors also inspired him to give back
and carry their legacy forward.
Thousand gives back and lends his skills in
many ways. Whether traveling across the globe
with Global Dental Relief or in his own community
of northern Florida, Thousand said, "Nothing
feels as good as giving back."
Just after graduating with his DDS degree,
Thousand had his first international experience
providing dental care in Guatemala, followed by
a trip a few years later to Nepal; he will continue
this lifelong passion for dental mission work
with a trip to Cambodia in 2018 as part of his
continued partnership with Global Dental Relief,
an organization founded in Colorado. "You travel
to these places and people are ridiculously happy
that you're there. People line up for city blocks to
get help from you and they are stoked," he said.
In addition to volunteering with international
programs, Thousand provides free dental care
1-2 times each month at the Wild Flower Clinic
in north Florida. Once a quarter he makes the
trip back to Colorado to pay it forward to future
periodontists by volunteering at the CU School of
Dental Medicine Periodontics Clinic and leading a
literature review for students.
"It is the greatest dental career anyone could
ask for," Thousand said.
The University of Colorado is honored to call
Dr. John Thousand a CU alumni and is proud of
the work he is doing to provide compassionate,
expert care to communities in need all across
the globe. ■
