CU DENTAL 2018

Becky Bye, fourth year dental medicine student, has
always wanted to help people. As a child, her dream
was to be a dentist or a lawyer. She decided to do
both.
For nine years, Bye practiced law in Denver,
and in 2018 she will fulfill her childhood dream of
becoming a dentist when she graduates with her
DDS degree from the University of Colorado School
of Dental Medicine. "The decision between these two
passions of mine was the most difficult decision I ever
had to make," said Bye. Now, she hopes to combine
her degrees, working in both law and dentistry. To
do so, she is finding inspiration in community health
clinics, where she is participating in clinical rotations.
Clinical rotations in community clinics give
students real-world, professional experience. And
for many students like Bye, it helps fuel a passion to
give back to the community. "It is so refreshing to go
into the community to see patients. This experience
has given me a new perspective on dentistry in the
Denver area," said Bye.
Through the generosity of the Colorado Dental
Association (CDA), Bye and other CU School of
Dental Medicine scholarship recipients receive the
needed additional financial support that propels them
toward their goal of becoming outstanding dentist.
"Scholarship support is so appreciated - it's
an extra confidence boost as I become a dentist,"
Bye said.
In 2005, the CDA created an endowed
scholarship fund at CU to support future dentists.
Knowing the burden of the growing cost of a dental
medicine education, the CDA continues to contribute
to their endowment to provide larger scholarships
for students. "We recognize the incredible amount

of debt these students have and our scholarship
is one step toward alleviating that burden," said
CDA Associate Executive Director, Operations/
Communications, Molly Pereira.
The CDA's goal is to provide resources for
dental professionals in Colorado by empowering
its 3,300 members to build and maintain thriving
dental practices. Their support is extended to
dental students, and the endowed scholarship is
just one resource in a growing list of engagement
opportunities for students and the CDA. Executive
Director Greg Hill visits the campus frequently to talk
with first-year students about opportunities through
the CDA and to connect them with professionals in
the field. "We communicate to them that we are there
for them," said Hill.
Last summer, the CDA launched a new tradition
to help grow their endowed scholarship fund by
organizing a successful "Beer Garden" event at
their annual governing board meeting in Beaver
Creek, Colorado. Also, for the first time, scholarship
recipients were invited to attend and were recognized
during the annual meeting. "It is important to support
education, and it is a big deal to just get into CU.
It is a great school and their peers know that," said
Pereira.
By presenting the scholarships at their annual
event, and getting to know the students, the CDA is
inspiring additional philanthropy from their members.
Hill added, "We get to know the students and they
are very impressive. It set the tone for our board to
see the incredible students we are supporting and
inspires them to continue supporting students at
CU."
